Plasticsfera as a possible factor of global distribution Vibrio cholerae (material for the preparation of the lecture)
AbstractThe tropical zone of the seas and oceans contains approximately 4.5 trillion plastic fragments of various sizes with a total weight of over 250,000 tons. To denote the global scale of this phenomenon, which can significantly change the existing biocenoses, a new term is proposed - "plastisphere". Recently, it was shown that toxic strains of cholera Vibrio in the form of monoculture are able to colonize the surface of plastic with the formation of biofilms.
The aim of the analytical study was to assess the possible risk of transfer of Vibrio cholerae O1, which is a part of biofilms on floating plastisphere particles, from countries with cholera problems to different regions of the world. Our interactive map of plastic pollution of the oceans was superimposed on the main trends of the global outbreaks of cholera, accompanied by ingress of the pathogen in the reservoirs. It is suggested that there is a possible risk of introduction of cholera agent in the form of biofilms on plastisphere particles in the Caribbean and in the Indian ocean.
